Lesson Plan: Lab Report in Microsoft WordObjective: Students may submit a lab report using the following template, instead of doing a hand written report. This is a great use of skills learned in computer class and applied in science through a lab report. Also, it gives the student practice in organizational skills and the scientific method. Procedures: 1. Follow the below template and type your information in the appropriate areas. 2. Keep everything aligned to the left the margin. Do not indent. 3. Make sure the problem, procedures and answers are in sentences. 4. Do not make copies of your report for other students to use. This is considered cheating and all students involved will receive a “zero”. 5. Highlight and print a hard copy hand in to me. 6. Required tables, charts and graphs may be done in Excel and inserted into your document for extra credit. Or they may be hand drawn and stapled to the back of the report. 7. You must turn in the report the next day after the lab is completed. Assessment: A total grade on a lab report can vary due to the length, difficulty and complexity of the lab. Usually, each data table, chart, graph etc. is worth five to ten points, depending on the amount and organization of the data. The points are divided into one or two and awarded for accuracy of the data and organization. Five to ten points are awarded for each analysis and conclusion answer. If two or more answers are part of the numbered question then they are treated as separate answers. One point is deducted for spelling, if they are words that are part of the written prelab instructions or the concepts introduced in class. A point is also deducted for errors in the report presentation if they have been explained beforehand. One point is deducted for each incomplete sentence or missing punctuation. Total scores for labs are often between 20 to 50 points. (Some labs are only 10 points. I call these teaching labs. There is an abbreviated report for these. I give more guidance and help. The grade is for completion and class discussion with students correcting their own work.
