Underage Drinking Webquest

Directions:  Before we get too far into Tears of a Tiger by Sharon Draper, I want you to become familiar with the dangers of and prevalence of teen drinking.  This issue has cost so many young people their lives and causes so much heartache.  Complete each section of the webquest below and turn in your answers to me.

Part I:

Answer the following questions in a Microsoft Word document using the website below. Be sure to label your section.  Please use complete sentences.  If you don't you will lose half credit!

*Use both the underage drinking section and impaired driving section to complete this part of the webquest.  Numbers 1-5 come from the first section of the website and numbers 6-10 come from the second section of the website.

1. Who is more likely to use alcohol: boys or girls?  What is the statistic on alcohol use for both genders?
2. By the end of high school, how many students have tried alcohol?

4. What percentage of youths age 12-17 disapproved of their peers using alcohol in 2005?
5. What fraction of 12th graders have reported being drunk at least once?  What fraction of 8th graders have reported being drunk at least once?
6. What is the percentage of young people (15-20 year olds) who were killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2005 and had been drinking?
7. Are drivers less likely or more likely to use seat belts when they have been drinking?
8. In 2005 what percentage of fatal crashes involved alcohol?
9. How many lives were saved by minimum drinking age laws in 2005?
10. What is the number one cause of death among youth ages 15-20 years old?

Part II:

Look at the following pictures.  Many of the accidents in these pictures were caused by drunk drivers.  Using a complete paragraph describe what you think the horrible effects underage drinking could have on a person's life.  Use a Microsoft Word document to record your paragraph.  Your paragraph should be 6-8 sentences in length.  If you want to include personal experiences, you may do so.
