In 6th Grade General Music we study the elements on music.  We start with the basic elements of rhythm and pitch.  We spend more time on these elements because they are also elements used in most of the other elements.  From there, we work through tone color and harmony.  The amount of time we spend on those elements depends on how much of the marking period we have left.

In order to learn these elements we use a variety of instruments, electronic keyboards, computer programs, and classroom instruction.  The main focus of the course is to give the student the tool to unlock the mysteries of a piece of music on their own.  By the time the class ends with the marking period, the student should have everything in their folder that would allow them to pick up a piece of music they have never seen or heard and learn it.

These skills are useful in their middle school years, high school years, and beyond.  The basic fundamental truths that we learn in this class are used in all types of music; from Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart to the music that these students hear on their radios today.
