Teacher Tips

Should you

drive, take the train or fly?

Suggested Grade Level: 8th grade or higher

Time Limit: At least 3 class periods

There are many variations and extensions for this activity. Below is are a few suggestions for each mode of transportation.

....................

Drive

Train Fly
I used Enterprise in my example because in our small town this is the only rental car agency in town. Have student use travelocity or another travel website to search for the best car rental. Cheaper prices may be available, but remind students that they may have to pay to park their car or pick the car up in advance. If students take the train, they will need transportation from the train station to Disney. They will need to either rent a car or take a taxi.

Student may also want to look into the price of taking the autotrain.

If a student choose to fly, they will also need transportation from the airport to Disney. The airport offers many options. Their are shuttle buses and many rental car agencies.

Travelocity does not always provide the cheapest price. Have student use individual airline website to search for the travel cost and compare those cost to the cost they found using Travelocity. There are also many other travel website (expedia, priceline, and cheap tickets to name a few)

Software Extension
There are also software extension. In the past I have had students use Microsoft excel to organize their information and create a chart. I then had students copy the chart into a word document to add visual support.
Hotel Extension
Remove the free hotel and have students compare the cost of staying at Disney Hotel verses a hotel off Disney property. Orlando has many hotels and many more things to do besides visiting Disney. Disney hotels can be very expensive, but one advantage to staying in a Disney hotel is once you arrive you do not need a car. Disney has free shuttle service to every place in the park.

Hope You Enjoy Your Trip!
