Introduction to the Quest

     CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

You have been chosen as the Grand Prize winner of an $8,000 credit card!  How exciting, but wait....there are some restrictions. Go to the Task to see a description of what you need to do to get the credit card.

The Task

"Nothing in life is ever free"

The credit card must be used for a trip to watch 3 baseball games. The sponsors of this prize require you to organize the trip before receiving the credit card. A detailed itinerary must be submitted to the prize organizers.

Your list will include the following  information:
        a)  the teams that you are going to visit and the estimated costs for each visit.
        b)  the dates for the games that you will attend.
        c)  the hotels where you are going to stay with the projected costs for each hotel.
        d)  the roads (and estimated distance) that you will travel.

All is not lost for non-baseball fans. If you are not a baseball fan, you may give this "trip" to another person after the plans are developed!

Proceed to the Process for the specific directions.

The Process

     "Show me the credit card"

A detailed itinerary must be submitted to the prize organizers before you see the credit card. After approving your trip's itinerary, the prize organizer will issue you a credit card worth $8000. A Trip Detail organization sheet will be filled out and submitted to the prize organizers. The costs must not exceed the $8,000 limit. The credit card will be used for a week long summer trip to any three Major League Baseball  stadiums of your choice. The group should include four people.  At least one of the members of your group must be an adult. Remember that non-baseball fans may give this "trip" to another person after the plans are created.

  • CHOOSE THE PEOPLE IN YOUR GROUP. List the names, ages, occupations, and relationship to you for each person that is going on your trip. Use the Group Members and Games organization sheet to list this information. Open the Group Members and Games Sheet. Copy and paste into a word document. Complete the sheet and print a copy to submit to the trip organizer.  Remember that at least one of the group members must be an adult. (Note: If you want your group to include two people from this class, go to the Cooperative Group instructions which are found below).

  • SELECT THE GAMES/DATES And STADIUMS YOU WANT TO ATTEND. Pick three professional baseball teams whose home stadiums you would like to visit. Use the internet to find schedules, stadium locations, and costs for tickets. You must decide which week during the summer that  you are going to travel. The length of the week will be seven days, but the week can start on any day.  The maximum trip length is 7 days. Use your favorite team's schedule when determining the dates. The trip is only good during non-school hours. Determine if there are any other expenses associated with going to a baseball game. For example, how is parking handled?  If there are other costs besides the price of the ticket, make sure they are included on your sheet. Use the Group Members and Games sheet as a guide for the desired information. Open the Group Members and Games sheet.  Copy and paste into a word document. Complete the sheet and print a copy to submit to the trip organizers.

  • DETERMINE WHICH HOTEL(S) YOU NEED TO STAY IN. You will spend one night in a hotel after attending the game. You must choose a hotel that is within 50 miles of the location that you are going to visit. The name of the hotel, address, distance from your visited site, and cost for one night's lodging must all be listed. The total cost for all 4 group members needs to be included. Each group member should have his or her own room. If the distance between stadiums requires you to drive for more than 10 hours, you may spend one night in a hotel before reaching the city where the next game is to be played. Place your information on the Hotel Costs sheet.  Open the Hotel Cost sheet. Copy and paste into a word document. Complete the sheet and print a copy to submit to the trip organizers.

  • DEVELOP A PLAN FOR THE ROADS THAT YOU WILL USE TO REACH YOUR DESTINATION. You must select (and identify) the roads that are going to be traveled, find the estimated distance between points of destination, and calculate the estimated time for each leg of the trip.  Use Map Quest to assist you.  The accepted mileage rate of $.365/mile will be used to project vehicle expenses because your personal vehicle (or a group member's vehicle) will be used. If the stadium is more than 10 hours away, plan on stopping to spend the night in a hotel. This information should be listed in the hotel costs. Place this information on the Road List and Cost sheet. Open the Road List and Cost Sheet. Copy and paste into a word document. Complete the sheet and print a copy to submit to the trip organizers.

  • PREDICT THE FOOD EXPENSES FOR YOUR TRIP. You will be given a $300 daily food allowance for your group. Keep track of the daily food expenses based on the number of days for your trip.  Place this information on the Food Expense Sheet. Open the Food Expense sheet.  Copy and paste into a word document. Complete the sheet and print a copy to submit to the trip organizers.

  • DETERMINE HOW TO HANDLE ANY REMAINING CREDIT. Any credit not spent on your trip will be given to charity. If you don't spend all of your credit, please list your favorite charity so that a check can be issued to them. Use the Remaining Credit Sheet. Open the Remaining Credit sheet. Copy and paste into a word document. Complete the sheet and print a copy to submit to the trip organizers.

  • COOPERATIVE GROUP INSTRUCTIONS.  Each person in the group will decide what game he/she wants to attend. The group must coordinate their choices because the dates need to be within one week of each other. The group then needs to determine the order in which they will attend the games. At that point, each individual member will be responsible for providing the stadium information, hotel information, road information, and projected food expense for his/her part of the trip. After completing the individual part, the group can then get back together to list all of the work on a group Trip Detail sheet. Each individual Trip Detail sheet and the group Trip Detail sheet will be submitted for approval before the credit card is issued.

The Conclusion

Did you really get a "free" credit card? It took lots of work to fulfill the obligations required by the prize organizers. Your math, computer, and thinking skills were challenged in this project. Some people enjoy this type of activity so much that they find jobs which require math, computer, and thinking skills. As you make decisions about your future, remember to consider which classes you need to take to prepare yourself. Learning math and  how to think or solve problems will open many doors of opportunity. Will you be ready when you hear the knock?

"EXTRA, EXTRA,  READ ALL ABOUT IT!"

As an extra bonus, the prize organizers will allow you to visit up to 2 minor league stadiums to watch the games as long as the stadiums are located along your traveled roads and the games are played during  your trip week. List all the same information that was required for the normal trip. Contact the organizers, if you have any questions about this extension.
