RESEARCH PAPER REQUIREMENTS

1.  Paper must be three to six typed pages long.

2.  You must have at least five sources.  For an A paper you should have more than five sources.  You must have at least two different kinds of sources.  At least three of your sources must be books.

3.  Use 12 point Times New Roman font.

4.  Use one-inch margins at the top, sides and bottom.

5.  On the first page, begin at the one inch top margin and type your name, your teacher's name (Mrs. Everhart), the course name, and the date on separate lines, double spacing between the lines.  Double space again and center the title.  Do not underline the title or put it in quotations marks.  Maintain the 12 point Times New Roman font.  No bold.

6.  Double space your entire paper.  Do not leave extra spaces between paragraphs.

7.  Number each page after page one, which will not be numbered.  Your last name with the page number next to it should be lined up with the right hand margin, 1/2 inch from the top of the page.  Just use a number; do not precede the number with the word "page" or any abbreviation of page.

8.  Indent paragraphs five spaces from the left margin.  Do not leave extra spaces  between paragraphs.

9.  The source of all summaries, paraphrases and quotations must be documented by placing a citation after the information.  A citation is the author's name and the page number placed in parentheses.  For example: (Stewart 21)  The citation is placed at the end of the sentence before the period.

If the source has no author, use the title or an abbreviated form of the title.

If the author's name is included in the text, just put the page number in parentheses.

10.  If you include long quotations in your text, indent the entire quotation 10 spaces.

11.  Every paper must have a works cited page.  It will have the heading "Works Cited," centered at the  top margin, one inch from the top of the page. Maintain the 12 point font.  No bold or caps. Number the page.

The works cited entries will be alphabetized by the first word in each entry whether that word is a title or author's name.  If the entry is a title, skip initial articles (a, an, or the) when alphabetizing.

The first line of a works cited entry starts at the left margin.  Subsequent lines are indented five spaces.

Double space within each entry.  Double space between entries.

See the "works cited" handout for individual formats for entries.  Follow these directions exactly.  They must be perfect for an A paper.

    Do not number the entries.

12.  Use either a report binder for your paper or paper clip the pages together.  Do not staple them
