Planned Instruction

Title of Planned Instruction:   Grade 6 General Music

Subject Area:   Arts and Humanities                    Grade Level:   6
Prerequisites: None

Course Description: Students will learn the elements and principles of music. They will learn to identify these elements in a piece. They will also use these elements in learning to sing and play keyboards and rhythm instruments in various styles, including musical theatre. They will use these elements to identify and discuss music from other countries. In addition, they will become familiar with the cultural backgrounds of the countries whose music they discuss. Students will also learn about American music and composers and the varying cultural backgrounds and historical events that have affected them.

These skills will not only provide musical knowledge and understanding but also be a source and reinforcement of critical thinking and analysis, cultural, creative writing, scientific, and mathematical skills used in other core subjects.

Required Time: One year              Course Credit:  ½ credit per year
