 FOOD AND NUTRITION RESOURCES

Nutrition Scavenger Hunt;  You have been hired by the nutrition police to find out information on some nutrition topics.  See if you can find the nutrition information.

Connecticut Team Nutrition;  Has many resources related to nutrition. Rate Your Plate is an interactive activity where you can choose foods for a meal and then compare the choices to either the  Food Guide Pyramid or The Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

You Are What You Eat; Is a simple scavenger hunt  to use in researching nutrition information

Interactive Food Label Quiz;  A 5 question quiz about food labels.

 U.S. FDA Food Labeling and Nutrition;  information about food labeling. 

Baking Bread Field Trip;  It includes excellent information on the history of bread, different types of wheat, the parts of a wheat kernel, milling wheat, making sour dough bread and functions of bread baking ingredients.  Lots of good interesting information along with pictures and diagrams.

 

CLOTHING AND TEXTILES RESOURCES

20th Century Fashions Tour Field Trip; A tour of fashions of the 20th century

U.S. Department of Labor and Industry;  Gives information about jobs in the textile industry

Embroiderer's Guild; This sit shows common stitches used in hand embroidery and how to create each stitch.

MONEY MANAGEMENT RESOURCES

Sense and Dollars Field Trip; covers issues in money management for teens. It has interactive games and lessons and is a good source for money management resources.

Anytime Advisor – Credit Management Coach;  Information about setting goals for money management, tactics to use when deciding on a purchase, a quiz covering personal spending habits and more.  Helpful information to use when studying money management, especially when using credit.

The Investor’s Clearinghouse;  Information on investments and money management.  It has links to  other sites that have information and activities for students,  and links to sites for educational materials.

The National Endowment for Financial Education; NEFE, has information for high school students about financial planning.  It also has a teachers section and a section called help for consumers. 

Investment Company Institute;  Online resources for young investors.

Managing Money: Spending and Saving;  PBS kids has a number of topics geared for teens about money management including: spending and saving, needs vs. wants, money goals, expect expenses, track your cash flow, create a budget, make a saving plan, banking and money tips.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT/BABYSITTING

Babysitting – A number of topics about babysitting are covered including safety, preparedness, keeping kids happy, tips for doing a good job, and the business of babysitting

18th Century Childhood Field Trip; looks at how children grew up in the 18th century as compared to today.

First School Preschool Activities and Crafts   has a lot of different activities for preschool children.

CDC Child Development Information   Centers for Disease Control and Prevention information on child development specifically preschoolers with links to other age-groups and links to information on certain childhood diseases.

The Importance of Play in Children's Development  A number of articles and summaries of research abstracts dealing with the importance of play and children's development from the National Literacy Trust.

 

 

CONSUMER DECISIONS

Reuse, Recycle, Reduce; is a scavenger hunt that focuses on reducing environmental wastes.

Consumer.gov ; gives tons of consumer information from federal government websites. It would be useful as a resource for me to use in the classroom. It would also be useful for students when looking up consumer information in nutrition, clothing and textiles, banking and money management etc.  It could also be a helpful resource for parents if they wanted information for their own personal use.

 

FAMILY AND FRIENDS

Sibling Rivalry: You vs. Them; information about sibling rivalry and how to deal with bothers and sisters.

Stepfamilies; PBS Kids gives useful information about living as part of a step family

When Friends Fight; How to deal with arguments between friends

What to do when a Friend is Depressed; – Guide for Students from the National Institute for Mental Health

How to be a Good Friend; Teaching Guide: Friendship, gives tips on how to be a good friend, plus has discussion questions and other activities.

Friendships-- Helping Your Child Through Early Adolescence; Article for parents who want to help their child to form good friendships and resist harmful peer pressure.
